Bayfield and Goderich - on Ontario's "West Coast"

Last weekend, the prospect of unseasonably warm weather inspired Terry and me to drive to southern Ontario to see our daughter. Whenever we visit her, especially now during the pandemic, we try to be outdoors as much as possible. Where could we visit this time?!

One of her friends had often mentioned a town called "Bayfield" on Lake Huron, a popular tourist destination for people living in the area.

Why not drive there and see what it's like? our daughter suggested.

Perusing the map, I saw that the town of Goderich was only a few miles north of Bayfield. One of my former teaching colleagues grew up there and often talked about it. It had always seemed so far away - but not if we were already in Bayfield.

Bayfield and Goderich are about - an hour's drive west of Stratford, Ontario - a place we visited on a previous visit.

Our day there was lovely and warm. It was hard to believe we were in November!

The one difference was that dusk came early - so we drove back home in the dark.

When we got to Bayfield, we were surprised to see a lot of tourists. I guess we weren't the only ones drawn by the warm weather.

After walking around the park for a bit, we continued on to Goderich, a much larger town.

As we drove around, we kept discovering little parks overlooking the water. We eventually ended up at "Sunset Beach" - near the lake.

I was surprised to discover that there was an underwater salt mine in Goderich. I had no idea that Canada even had salt mines! Apparently, there is a large underground salt deposit at this spot.

(Does this mean that Lake Huron was once an ocean?! More research needed!)

I also discovered - online - that normally the mine offers tours - but not now, due to the pandemic.

That would be so interesting to see! I'll put it on my list of things to do, once the pandemic is over.
