Andrew Haydon Park - With the Kids...

Last week we took our grandkids to Andrew Haydon Park.

It was their first time there.

They played on play structures their father had enjoyed as a child..

We hoped to see some pond animals ...

Sure enough, Jericho spotted a turtle sunning  on a log.

I wonder if these black eggs in the water are future tadpoles.

So much beauty - and young life - in the park in spring.

I always love going there!

Remembering...

I recently came across a group of photos taken a while back. For historical context, our kids were all teenagers at the time, Terry and I were 10 years away from retiring, and my mother had not yet moved from Kelowna to Ottawa. She decided to do that three or four years later.

Terry was a regular at an annual charity auction - and would bring home tickets for various events in the city. (Always a surprise!) Several times he got tickets for this river cruise here in Ottawa. We enjoyed being "tourists" in our own city.

It's unusual for us to have photos of the Rideau Falls on the Ottawa River from this angle...

Or the Chateau Laurier Hotel.- next to the Parliament buildings on the right, hidden by trees.

It's a surprise to see how much younger we looked then! (Just as it's a surprise nowadays to look in the mirror and see white hair and wrinkles! When did that happen?!)

Good times!

Here It Is!

A few weeks ago, Terry and I were driving home from our daughter's Ottawa apartment... and the sky was amazing!!

We had just returned from eating at our favourite vegetarian restaurant (the Green Door), trying to maximize the little time we had left together before her move to Toronto.

The sky looked ominous as we drove back to the apartment, but the rain held off. Then a few minutes after we got there, ... a sudden downpour!

When the rain stopped, we headed home. She still had s lot of packing to do...

On the drive home, the sky was pink and blue. It looked so amazing - so different - that I kept taking pictures as we drove.

Later I wrote a blog post about the pictures.

I wonder how many people shared pictures of that sky in Ottawa, I wondered, as I checked the Weather Network's photos..,

Nobody?!!

Gotta fix that! I uploaded one... It was hard to choose.

So here it is!

The Lure of the Ice...

The snow that arrived in early December has mostly melted.

Our weather has been mild, though the past few days have again turned colder - but not enough time for the ice on the rivers around us to thicken...

In the news we hear of people falling through the ice and sometimes, tragically, drowning - as two teens did a week ago.

So it's shocking to me - as we drive along the river parkway - to see more people leaving the safety of the path and walking on the river... What are they thinking?!

Private Pool Rentals

(I learn so many things from my kids! They were the first to tell me about Uber, Uber Eats, banking e-transfers - and so much more!)

A recent discovery: One of my son’s friends has a lovely swimming pool at home. It is mostly used on weekends - so during the week he often rents it out for an hourly fee - via an online app called  “Swimply”…

Only in Ottawa? I wondered…

Apparently not. Some of my daughter’s friends recently gathered for a “girls night” at a rented rooftop pool in Toronto.

I never realized that people would rent out their backyard pools… But why not?

(Live and learn!)

More Daylight Coming...

Intrigued by our yearly cycle of lengthening and shortening days, last year I kept track of sunrise and sunset times. Now I’m into my second year of tracking.

I’ve learned some interesting things along the way. One is that the “shortest day” where we live is actually 4 days - from December 19-22.

Though sunrise and sunset times fluctuated, each of those days had 8 hours and 43 minutes of daylight.

Since January 1, we’ve increased a minute of daylight each day - in the afternoon. We currently have 8 hours and 58 minutes of daylight - according to the weather app.

But, based on last year’s data - starting today we should be jumping to 2 or 3 extra minutes a day... which adds up to about 20 minutes a week... That should be noticeable!

Where should we walk?!

With Ontario under stay-at-home orders since early April - and no end in sight - Terry and I have decided to make a list of parks where we haven’t walked in. Yet ... we keep coming back to the same ones.

But there’s something very comforting about the familiar, I said... We know exactly what to expect...

And sometimes we go to parks with memories - like this one where our youngest son played soccer for years. It was his team’s home field.

(Though in those days, I remembered it for the mosquitos - not for the lovely river view.)

Back at Andrew Hayden Park

Andrew Hayden Park has become a favorite walking destination for me the past little while.

It’s not far away...

The fresh air near the water is invigorating...

The scenery stunning.

But the river does bring a breeze.

The weather is colder. Time to dig out my winter hat and gloves! Fall is truly here...

Hot Air Balloon Ride

Sixteen years ago today - on November 25, 2000, I went on a hot air balloon ride with my daughter.

There was a little snow on the otherwise brownish landscape around us.

Balloon rides begin early in the morning or late in the afternoon - I'm not sure why. Perhaps there are more gentle breezes then.

We soon outdistanced the balloon lifting off right after us.

This was a morning excursion, the early morning November sun casting long shadows. We were dressed for cold weather.

We started out at the edge of Carleton University campus and sailed over the Rideau Canal towards Dow's Lake.

There is no way of knowing exactly where the wind will take a balloon. Amazingly, this day it took us right over the school where I taught... Adult High School (formerly the High School of Commerce). The school looks like a group of three buildings to the left of the tall apartment building in the center of the photo. In actuality, it is one building with several different third-floor roofs.

Equally amazing - we next flew over Parliament Hill... (How great is that?!!)

Then across the river to Quebec, where we landed gently in a park.

Once safely landed and out of the balloon, we celebrated with hot coffee spiked with Bailey's.

(Summer balloon rides traditionally end with a glass of champagne.)

Canada Day in Andrew Hayden Park

One of the most popular places for Ottawa families to spend Canada Day used to be Andrew Hayden Park, near the Nepean Sailing Club, in Ottawa's West End.

The view is spectacular...

Carnival rides were set up for the children...

There were animals around - like these ducks in the water...

And this petting zoo.

People could bring picnic lunches and barbecues...

It was easier to keep track of your children here. (A crowd of hundreds of thousands gathers around Parliament Hill!)

But like downtown, many dressed in red and white, the colors of Canada's flag.

A year ago we dropped in to visit my 92-year-old mother, who lives nearby.

Even she was wearing red and white for Canada Day!

After many successful years, in 2012 Canada Day festivities were cancelled...

They were always so popular - I wonder why!

Relaxing... at an OUTDOOR SPA

I'm not a spa person... Or so I thought - until I recently spent a day at a spa in the woods of Chelsea, Quebec, a 15-minute drive from Ottawa.

The day at the spa was a birthday gift for my daughter from one of her brothers, who invited me to come along.

Several Christmases ago, he gave us the gifts of facials, manicures and pedicures at a downtown spa. But this was very different. The focus of this day away was RELAXATION.

Why do I need that? I wondered... After all, I'm retired! Won't I be bored spending a day wandering from pool to pool (some hot, some cold) or sitting in a sauna...

I wasn't sure I could handle that much inactivity - or silence. (The spa requests that guests refrain from loud talking: silence, or whispered conversation only.) So I took a book to read (which I never opened!)

It was a truly relaxing experience!

My favorite places were the hot pools, especially this one with a waterfall...

And a Finnish (dry-air) sauna. I didn't even venture into the second (steamy) sauna that my daughter loved.

I also enjoyed relaxing in one of the outdoor fire pit rooms, where I sat and looked at the trees...

There were no distracting noises: silence... (I didn't realize how relaxing SILENCE can be!)

We had no mud baths or facials... or massages. (They have to be booked in advance, and we were too late.)

We did, however, enjoy a gourmet lunch.

Seven hours after we arrived, we reluctantly left... It had been a perfect day!
