Sutton Farmers Market

Last Saturday we passed through Sutton, Quebec - en route home from nearby Cowansville.

We decided to stop at their Saturday Farmers Market, which runs from July through October.

The day was chillier than I expected. I wished I had a hat to wear! There were lots of farm fresh fruits and vegetables - as well as jams and baked goods to buy.

No surprise that we bought some pastry and jam!

Also this lovely bag, sewn in Africa, sold as a fundraiser for children in African schools.

Glad we discovered this corner of the community! Markets are always fun places to check out!

Back to Carp Farmers Market

Terry and I headed back to Carp Farmers Market last Saturday - the first time we’ve been there this year.

It was nice to be back. 

The week’s theme was “garlic”… and we saw a lot of vendors selling different kinds.

We arrived shortly before the market closes…

One should never do that! The baker I planned to buy from had sold out of almost everything. Yet Terry was still able to buy corn and maple syrup - his staples. So he drove home happy. 

Next time we’ll make a point of arriving early!

Farm Store Visit

After our brief visit to Pakenham, mentioned yesterday’s blog, Terry had one more destination in mind - a nearby farm to see if the farmer, Glen Needham, still had corn on the cob.

Most years, corn season ends in late August or early September, but we had a long summer this year, so Terry was hopeful.

Terry often buys corn from Glen at various farmers markets. This was the first time we came here to get it.

Terry did manage to get a few cobs - and, this late in the season, they still tasted very good.

We also checked out Glen’s new greenhouse... 

I wonder if he envisages enlarging it someday to be as big as the one we saw in London...

Last time we were here, Glen had just installed an outdoor furnace that would heat the house, store and barn. I see it burns wood. Here’s  a pile ready to go this winter... 

Glen also has a gizmo like a cannon that he uses to shoot pumpkins into the field. Actually, he has an old truck in the field and aims the pumpkins at the truck...

The pumpkin cannon can be seen to the left of the barn.

Farming is a lot of work, but I suspect Glen also has a lot of fun.

Parkdale Market Now Open!

Parkdale Market is one of the oldest outdoor markets in the city.

It closes in winter…

Terry and I wandered through it a few days ago. It was up and running!

Terry had a burger…

It almost felt as if life is returning to normal here in Ottawa!

With vaccination rates surpassing 70%… perhaps it is!

Saturday Drive

On Saturdays in summer, Terry and I often head out into the country...

Sometimes we go to the Carp Farmers Market...

A few weeks ago, after visiting the market., we continued on to another favorite venue - Wes's French Fries in Arnprior...

To our amazement, there was a lineup!

Always delicious!

Sunny Saturday Visit to TWO Farmers Markets!

One recent Saturday, Terry and I headed to the Carp Farmers Market.

Our shopping list included maple syrup and baked goods...

I noticed a vendor's stall with crocheted curtains similar to some that I have at home.

So pretty... Maybe I need to put mine up somewhere...

Then - since the weather was too nice for us to simply head home again - we continued on to Almonte, where they also have a farmers market...

I noticed one vendor's stall there with antique quilts as table cloths...

Another great crafty idea!

A man riding a bicycle with a seat in front caught my eye...

Was he giving rides?!

He drove off before we could ask him!

We stopped at a fund-raising barbecue on main street for an impromptu lunch...

Took a stroll along the river...

Then headed to Baker Bob's so that Terry could buy a small carrot cake...

Then home again! A perfect day!

Farmers Market in the City

Saturdays Terry and I often go to a farmers market...

There are quite a few in our community - including several in the city.

We were hunting for a certain kind of maple syrup on this shopping trip. We ended up buying several large bottles.

But I could have bought a lot of other things too.

Especially flower baskets and bedding plants.

But I'm always drawn to baked goods - and other goodies I really shouldn't eat!

Guelph Farmers Market

My daughter shops weekly at the Guelph Farmers Market - a cozy place where baked goods, crafts, prepared foods as well as fresh fruit and vegetables are sold.

It's an easy walk from her house... so we left the car at home.

Several vendors sell local honey and wax products.

The apples looked good!

I can see why she likes to shop here.

Unlike the Carp Farmers market that we often shop at, this one is open all year long.

First Farmers Market

Last Saturday, Terry and I drove to Carp, for our first farmers market of the season...

The parking lot was full - and in the food court, line-ups were long.

This queue to buy "bacon on a bun" extended to the front gate!

Why are so many people be here?Terry wondered... There isn't much produce available... Mostly nursery plants...

Why are we here?! It's lovely to be out on a sunny day...

And the food here is great! 

It's a fun, friendly place to be!

Cumberland's Christmas Market

One of the Christmas markets I like to visit is the annual one held in Cumberland, Ontario.

The town itself is so pretty!

This time, we also headed over to the ferry dock - where several boats keep busy ferrying cars and trucks across the river between Ontario and Quebec.

(In Terry's working days, one of his colleagues took this ferry daily.)

Of course, we always stop to have lunch in the church basement...

(Biscuits, chili, blueberry and lemon pie!)

We brought homemade jam from a favorite vendor...

Rocky road squares, a bag of ground coffee beans...

... and  set of quilted place-mats.

It was just a perfect day!
