What Is That in the River?!!

There is so much to learn! (Nothing like travel to quickly make one realize that!)

On our recent visit to Quebec City, we were walking along a path by the St. Lawrence River in the early evening when I heard someone glance at the river and comment, "Des baleines..." Whales in English...

I looked and noticed some floating objects moving upstream...

A bird was perched on one of them.

Others followed...

Was this a pod of whales? Or could it be eels swimming upstream?

When it lifted out of the water, the front part resembled a snake head...

Or could it be seals?! Though they looked a little big for that...

Perhaps it was"des baleines," whales...

After loading the photos on to the computer and zooming in on them, I came to the conclusion that we had seen harp seals. They apparently live in the St. Lawrence River.

Different kinds of seals are different colors - and harp seals have blotchy coloring, like the seals in my pictures.
