Winterlude Begins

Last weekend was the beginning of Winterlude, Ottawa's annual winter festival. Terry and I wandered over to Confederation Park, site of the ice sculpture competition.

A few ice sculptures were completed...

There were even a few you could sit on, like this easy chair made of blocks of ice! (Hurry and take the picture, Terry said... This is COLD!)

The ice sculpture competition was just beginning...

It was fun to see them set up their blocks of ice and draw the design on.

(It's cold, hard work!)

I was surprised to see participants from hot countries, like Mexico...

Where do they get ice to practice on?!

(These ice blocks are especially manufactured near Toronto. To make them stronger, the water is kept moving - to eliminate bubbles - while they freeze.)

  2. Hi I carved the otter and the owl/wolf/tree carving... in answer to your question we don't practice we draw and visualize so many times it can usually flow pretty well. to practice a whole piece would cost at least 1000$ = three days to do it.
I like your pics and see you again at winterlude... Scott.
