Thankful!

Ottawa is still reeling from the damage caused by a half hour “derecho” storm that struck at 4 pm on Saturday, May 21, a week and a half ago. But day by day, things are improving.

A lot of trees snapped, others - mainly pine trees - were pulled over, totally uprooted. Apparently pine trees have shallow roots - and with the rain we’ve had this spring, the soil is moist.

That’s what happened here - this uprooted tree landed on a neighbouring house and car. For now, the tree has been removed from the roof of the house, so damage can be assessed.

Our neighborhood lost power. For some, “normal” will return once electricity returns, downed trees are cut up and hauled away - and houses (and cars) repaired.

I was shocked, yesterday, to read a long list of the many neighborhoods where residents were still without power 10 days after the storm. Our neighborhood was in the list, though some of us had electricity restored on day 4.

Yet I’ve been reluctant to restock our fridge… Lingering fear remains. So I’ve been buying a few groceries here and there - what we need and no more.

I’m still apprehensive. It’s hard to feel that life has returned to normal with signs of destruction still around us.

But I’m also thankful that cleanup has happened so quickly - and that the damage wasn’t worse. Hydro workers brought in from different parts of Canada and the USA are helping us get back to “normal” as quickly as possible.
