Birthday Memory from August 5, 2000

Sorting through old photos, I came across this one from August 5, 2000.

Ah! I remember...

All the kids - aged 16, 18 and 20 - were still living at home, two still in high school.

Nobody looks really happy, even though it’s a family birthday celebration. I see ice cream. Is there cake? Only the birthday boy is smiling!

Could the plastic sheet blocking the dining room from the space beyond (on the left of the photo) be the reason why everyone looks a little stressed?

We were in the midst of a major renovation, adding three rooms to the back of the house. All summer we lived in a construction zone, the new addition blocked off from the rest of the house by a plastic sheet.

The renovation began in May and continued until the end of August.

Were we experiencing “renovation fatigue”?

I wouldn’t be at all surprised - given the tired looks on all our faces!

But eventually that all came to an end, and we went back to “life as usual”!

(There were no front yard flower beds then - just fresh green grass.)

An interesting aside: The man who (together with his twin brother) built our stone driveway with intricate care is now the fire chief of Ottawa! (The baby son he spoke of would now be in his 20’s!) Time doesn’t stand still!
