Mary’s Amaryllis Drawings

My neighbor Mary, who does botanical art, mentioned that she had tried to grow amaryllis flowers a few years ago - to have live flowers for her winter botanical drawings.

I love her study of this bulb. The bulb I bought was flatter than this one (above) - more like an onion.

One of her bulbs was covered in wax and didn’t need to be watered. I’ve never seen a bulb in wax - but then, I’ve never grown flowering bulbs in winter before either.!

Mary also mentioned that she shone artificial light on the bulbs for several hours a day.

I’ve also been shining a light on mine every evening, as our daylight hours are so limited.
