Earlier this spring, I spent several fascinating hours watching five young squirrels emerge from the nest above - which was bigger and in better shape at the time.
I could clearly watch the squirrel antics - as one, then another emerged - then exuberantly ran back and forth on the tree's bare branches, checked on the nest, then ran off again. In the process, the nest started to fall apart!
I wondered how so many squirrels had fit inside. I also wondered if the mother would come back and repair the nest - but she didn't. It has been abandoned.
Now - as the tree's leaves grow back - they will soon hide the nest from my sight, leaving me to wonder if the home will ever be repaired... Or will it simply be abandoned and a new one built on some other branch?!
