Color mixing - to create the exact hue needed - is one of the more challenging aspects of painting.
In fact, when I was doing my last portrait above (still unfinished), I decided to invest in a book with recipes for mixing various skin tones.
The problem of creating exact colors doesn't end with portraits. We spent our last class - in winter nature drawing - going over rules for creating earth tones.
One of the most useful paint "recipes" mentioned is that black can be made by mixing ultramarine blue and burned umber (brown).
I know all this information is pretty basic. But call me undisciplined: after an hour, I started to get a headache!
