Getting Used to Vegetarian Eating

I've been eating vegetarian for a little over three months now. The switch to non-meat was made easier by the fact that I lived with a vegetarian for many years. My daughter became vegetarian in her early teens - so, over the years, I've became familiar with how vegetarians eat.

At the beginning of my transition, I stocked up on a lot of frozen vegetarian meals, and I still keep some in the freezer.

But I've also started making more easy vegetarian dishes for myself, like this omelette that has onion, mushrooms, spinach and sweet potato in it. This would be my main course, with cherry tomatoes on the side. I often eat hummus and a whole avocado together with a salad or the hearty vegetarian soup I've been making for years. Planning and preparing food gets easier as time goes on. My goal, at the moment, is eat vegetarian for a year - and see if my type 2 diabetes symptoms improve. If  they do, I'll probably continue, but if not, I'm really not sure what I'll do. I've been on two diabetes medications and both have had negative side effects that seriously affected my quality of life. I'm currently not taking any diabetes medication, an experiment my doctor is aware of.

My daily fasting blood sugar readings haven't gone down significantly here at home. They did drop when I was visiting my son and his family, playing with my three-year-old granddaughter during the day. So keeping active is important. But I have lost a few pounds, so my food experiment hasn't been a total failure!

Sunny Day - Feeling Great!

Sunny days always give me joy!

Yesterday was sunny - and I felt so energetic!

There's still a lot of snow on the ground - but no snow in the forecast for a week!

Terry tells me that we've had twice as much precipitation (rain, ice pellets, snow, etc.) as normal... He hates the snowy part of winter - as it means a lot of shoveling...

But for me the clear skies and sun make all the difference in the world!

Handbuilding Class... with Tim

There are limited spaces in city-run pottery studios: this term I didn't get in...

What to do?!

After thinking about it for a bit, I decided to take a class with a potter known for creating interesting looking birds... As soon as he showed us how he made them, I tried one myself...

Here it is before I wrapped it in plastic to slowly dry for a week...

I tried to create an interesting head of feathers - but, now that it's done, it looks a little strange! It's probably good to photograph things we make... A picture provides a different  view and impression.

Like everything else - practice makes perfect. I hope none of the pieces fall off in its numerous trips through the kiln!

Rediscovering Old Souvenirs: Armenian Art

When I was a university student living in Jerusalem, I'd occasionally treat myself to a souvenir mug or tile made by local Armenian artisans...

I particularly love the blues in their traditional art. This tile depicts the tree of life...

Armenians were invited to move to Jerusalem to make decorative tiles for the two mosques in the old city.

Over time, I purchased several tiles and mugs...

Shortly after I retired, I returned to Jerusalem with my youngest son. Wanting to buy a few more tiles, I discovered that most were now made using computer generated art...

I bought two...

Going through kitchen cupboards recently, I found one of the mugs I'd bought as a student. I've started to use it again - now (having done pottery for a while) I see it in a slightly different way...

The mugs have a simple shape - and are about the same thickness as the tiles...

I wonder if I could try to replicate the painting on it... It may also have symbolic meaning. I wonder what it is...

Dilemma: How to Spend My Winter?!

Winter - here in Ottawa - is not a constant temperature. Snow doesn't just fall and stay...

It melts... off roofs (for a while)... then freezes again!

When it re-freezes - as it is doing on our driveway - as it has done a number of times already this winter, I have to be careful!

I could fall!

Now that I don't have to go out to work anymore, fear of falling could be a real temptation to stay indoors... But I need to get out...

Taking a class would force me to get out and drive, meet people and be more active!

What to do?!

I can't let winter get me down!

Winter Skies!

Winter is so bleak and cold...

I particularly appreciate the colorful evening sky... and the reflection of the sky’s colours on the slick snow.

(Even if sunset does come early these days...)

It sets around 5 pm at this time of year.

Coyotes... in Our Neighborhood?!!

A few weeks ago, a photo of a coyote appeared in our newspaper. It was taken 6.5 kilometers from our home - opposite the hospital closest to us - the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

Around the same time, our neighbor Rob  (four doors down) reported seeing one in his back yard. He even managed to take a picture of it...

Are coyotes coming into town these days?! I hope not! I'm not really comfortable knowing they're wandering around our neighborhood!!

Hard Decisions

My daughter recently moved into a new - open concept - apartment. To make her new home look uncluttered, she has had to get rid of a lot of things that she was holding on to - in case she ever needed them...

It has been very liberating, she told me. I feel great whenever I take out another recycling bin of paper. Or whenever I give away furniture I no longer want. Slowly the place is looking the way I want it to - uncluttered!

I think of her enthusiasm for de-cluttering as I survey the boxes of papers (remnants of my teaching days) that clutter my study.

Will I feel as happy if I recycle these? Do I want to sort through them ever again? What if I decide to create more teaching material (a highly unlikely possibility!)?

So much time has gone into these papers... it's hard to just toss them...

But maybe that's what I really need to do!

One Good Thing About Winter...

I'm not a winter person. I don't ski or skate. I'd be perfectly happy in a snow-less environment.

Winter keeps me indoors much of the time...

When I'm indoors, I'm often motivated to go through things, getting rid of what I no longer need.

That's what I've been doing for the past few days.

If today were sunny and warm, I'd want to head outdoors. But not today...

A year ago, I read Marie Kondo's two books on tidying up. She calls it a joy. I found her books very helpful... I love her system of folding and organizing drawers...

I've managed to keep this tea towel drawer tidy for the past year with no effort at all.

Last year I worked on closets and drawers; this winter I've been motivated to go through all my kitchen cupboards.

First I clear them...

Then I look for boxes, bins and baskets to put things in.

Sometimes a great box simply doesn't fit into the space allotted...That's disappointing... "Back to the drawing board!"

Marie Kondo stresses not having more than one stash of the same item in different places...

It takes time to figure things out. But I'm hoping that, if winter lingers, I may actually get the whole kitchen done. That would be nice!

Exploring Union Station

Union Station in Toronto, where I catch the train to Ottawa, has been undergoing major renovations for the past few years... (Yes, YEARS!) Every time I go there, things are different.

But on my last visit, there seemed to be less construction...

I was an hour early. Maybe I could explore a bit without getting lost (and missing my train)!

I wandered around, trying to figure out where the new food court was from the waiting area in the large hall... Checking my google map app - I saw it was only a two-minute walk from where I was!

Two minutes?! But where?!

I asked a train employee - who pointed to two doors nearby: Go through those doors and turn right...

I did - and found myself in an area where commuter train tickets are sold... and also food...

A bake shop selling Uncle Tetsu's Japanese cheese cake was only a few steps away. Perfect!

I purchased one and headed back, with time to spare!

Glad I took the time to explore!

“Babysitting Grandma”

I recently headed to Toronto for a few days...

I was excited for an opportunity to spend time with my grandchildren: the baby I had last seen when he was only a few days old and his three-year-old sister.

The baby is now two months old.

I spent time reading and doing Play Doh with my granddaughter who - inspired by the children’s TV program with “Emma Wiggles” - loves ballet.

Here she is, planning her next choreographed moves...

I brought along the book on how to babysit a grandma - which we read together several times - trying to do as many of the suggested activities as possible, including making indoor tents. This creation was our play space for two days. It had two "bedrooms" where we could talk to each other through a "window" - i.e., the legs of a stool. I did a lot of crawling around - which I consider good physiotherapy!

It was a lot of fun!

Winter is Half Over!

Yesterday marked the half-way point in Terry's "100 Days of Winter"... (He calculates December 1 as the first day of winter and March 10 as the last. These two dates have an average daytime temperature of 0 degrees Celcius / 32 degrees Fahrenheit).

Terry spent much of the morning clearing snow from our driveway - a job made harder by his careful attention to detail.

I offered to help, but I wasn't meticulous enough!

My approach is this, I told him: Decide what is most important ... If I could only do half an hour of snow removal, what should I focus on...?

His approach is to do it perfectly: Move the chairs off the front deck and don't forget to sweep away the snow that's under the chairs...

But the sun will get that, I protested...

He didn't complain when I didn't do it his way - but it's hard to work with someone who has higher standards than you have!

No wonder you are discouraged every time it snows, I told him. It frustrates you that your carefully manicured driveway is covered with more snow and you have to start over again...

He agreed - but I think he's stuck in his ways - just as I am stuck in mine!

A Beautiful Gift

Terry and I were shopping in an antique furniture store with my daughter...

As we wandered around, I couldn't help but admire some metal candelabras on the wall...

I love them! I told my daughter... Not that we need anything...

But on Christmas Day there was one under the tree for me!

It's so beautiful...

(Now to figure out where to hang it!)

Update: Eating Vegetarian

I've been eating vegetarian for three months now - in hopes of lowering my blood sugar naturally. Eating vegetarian (no meat) and especially vegan (no animal products at all, like milk, eggs, jello made from animal bones, etc.) has been shown by some studies to improve the glucose management of some type 2 diabetics.

It isn't easy being vegetarian when you live with someone who loves meat! But Terry is trying to be supportive - he does go to a vegetarian restaurant with me once a week. The rest of the time, when we cook, I eat only vegetables and he eats them with meat.

I eat a lot of hummus (which is bean based) as well as homemade bean and vegetable soup. I often have oatmeal for breakfast. I eat yogurt and other milk products, though I've experimented in avoiding them for a few days here and there - to see if that makes a difference...

The bad news is that my blood sugar levels haven't nose-dived. They remain quite high. That said, I  also stopped taking my diabetes medication (with the knowledge of my doctor) because I was losing strength and having difficulty walking, a rare but documented negative side effect.

When I read (and re-read) the reports of the vegetarian studies, I find myself in them... I'm among "those who don't lower their blood sugar"...  another documented group.

Apparently some of those have improved their blood pressure and other signs of good health. My next appointment with my diabetes specialist in late February should show me if I'm among this group.

In the meantime, I've had one positive result... I've lost a few pounds. If that trend continues, maybe an improvement in my blood sugar will follow. It sometimes does.

World of White

Yesterday morning, I awakened to a fresh world of white!

Not long ago, I had come back from a few days in Toronto...

When I returned home by train, I longingly watched Toronto’s light sprinkling of snow recede in the distance...

Thanks to its proximity to Lake Ontario, Toronto has much milder weather than Ottawa.  The winter that Terry and I lived in Toronto - (our second year of marriage) - there was snow on the ground for only 6 weeks.

That doesn’t happen Ottawa - or in Montreal where we had lived before that - unless we have a very, very unusual winter.

They're not that far apart - but their weather patterns are all completely different.

Two Fun Books

A few notable books came my way this past Christmas... making me laugh... and also bringing tears to my eyes!

Several in our family are cat-lovers - so this book about how cats think was entertaining for all of us, those who live with cats, and those who observe from afar...

Another book, a children's book about "How to Babysit a Grandma" reminded me of the fun my granddaughter and I had last November, when I was staying with her family, before her baby brother was born.

So many memories!

Three-year-olds are so much fun!

Celebrating: Our Printer is Working Again!

Late last summer Terry decided to switch internet providers - to save money.  Two negative consequences resulted: our wireless printer no longer worked. The computer's operating system couldn't accept the idea that we had made a change and refused to connect to the printer!

Consequently, we haven't been able to print anything for months.

The second - equally annoying - problem is that my cell phone doesn't get a good internet connection at the back of the house, with our new provider's weaker signal. I keep being asked if I want to log on to my neighbor's wifi!

Recently things came to a head when I needed to print a shipping label to return a defective product I had bought online...

After several hours of trying to connect the printer to the computer using a cable... (Forget wifi!) I eventually got the printer to work! I really have no idea how!

But I'm so thankful... I was on the verge of telling Terry I needed to go out and get a new computer with compatible printer NOW!

(At times like this, I sometimes think about my grandparents, who didn't even own a TV. Had they heard about life as we know it - with internet, wifi, skype, online shopping, household computers and printers  - they would surely have shaken their heads in disbelief! )

Fun Fake Money

One of my sons recently spent a few days in Las Vegas, where he brought a few souvenirs for himself - fake money that made him smile...

The Barack Obama "bill" claims to be worth $44 - as Obama was the 44th US president...

The fake Trump bill, on the other hand, is supposedly worth a billion dollars!

I thought my son might enjoy displaying his fake money, so I hunted for some simple acrylic frames...

I got an extra one for a fake million dollar Canadian bill I bought (at Canadian Tire) as a Christmas socking-stuffer for one of my kids years ago... I thought it was cute! It's been sitting in a desk drawer for years.

The queen looks so young -  and Canada now has plastic money - so this bill has been around for a long time!

I guess we now have the beginnings of a fake - joke - money collection!

Appreciating Indoor Plants

Now that the world outside is white, I appreciate my indoor plants all the more.

My favorites these days are a purple African violet currently in bloom...

And this tall snake plant across the room from my chair...

Plants are therapeutic: Seeing them, I forget that winter is here!

Letting Go of Old Papers

One of my de-cluttering goals is to get rid of things I no longer need or want - so that shelves and cupboards will have empty spaces!

One of the areas I've tackled recently is a bin of old papers that date back to my teaching days.

I have a plastic bin full of file folders I may never want...

But a tiny part of me doesn't want to part with them... just in case... in case I some day find time to create online spelling exercises... (something I think of doing from time to time)...

But will that idea ever be so important to me that I'll actually do it?!

Maybe not... But I'm still finding it hard to let go!

Correction!!

A few days ago I mentioned Terry's "90 Days of Winter"...

After reading it, he corrected me... "It's 100 days - and it goes to March 10..."

(All I can say is that I hope winter is shorter this year!)

Perfect for Retirees

Since retiring, I don't get as much done as I did in my working days. Sometimes it bothers me...

For a long time I've asked myself: Why?!

I finally came to the conclusion that it's because I have no deadlines!

This mug I saw online describes the situation perfectly: I simply don't feel WORKY on many a day!

My motto in retirement has been: Life is short! Have fun!

I don't want to change it now!

Desk Doughnut

My daughter gave me this "desk doughnut" for Christmas...

It's a pin cushion... Not sure what else you could use it for on a desk...

But my question is: When I start to use it, will it make me crave doughnuts or other sweet desserts?!

It does look appetizing!

Eating Oatmeal for Breakfast

For the past 3 months, I've been eating vegetarian - in the hopes that my blood sugar levels will drop.

For breakfast, I often eat a bowl of oatmeal... But without sugar, it can be a little bland.

Occasionally I eat oatmeal cold as muesli, a Swiss favorite, with yogurt and dried fruit.

But most often I cook up a pot of oatmeal. Sometimes I add a tablespoon of raisins to sweeten it.

Or I cook the oatmeal with an unpeeled chopped-up apple...

The diet book I refer to suggests eating half a cup of baked beans along with it...

Others in the family add a tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter...

I'm going to have to try that!

"Pawn Stars" Souvenir

Terry doesn't need clothing (he always tells us) - but he does enjoy wearing shirts that are "conversation pieces."

People often stop to ask him about his Bishops University hoodie or his Maui T-shirt.

"Yes, I studied at Bishops..."

"No, my son brought this back for me from Maui..."

Souvenir clothing get a conversation going.

So I was glad our son was able to find a souvenir T-shirt from the pawn shop on Pawn Stars on his last trip to Las Vegas... (Even though I made a mistake when he asked me what size to get - and I told him a size too big!)
