Snow Shovelling

Those who have never shovelled snow may think it’s a simple task, but it isn’t!

After you push all that snow off the driveway and walkway, you may think you’re done - but you’re not...

When the city snowplough plows the street, it usually leaves a ridge, which also needs to be removed before it hardens.

And - if you’re like Terry - you’re still not done! Now you take a second shovel - one used to remove snow from the roof!

It’s all part of the fun of WINTER!

Is this winter?!

Yesterday we woke up to see thick fluffy snow on the ground - more than last time it snowed, in mid-November…

Is this the beginning of winter?!

I quickly checked the forecast for the coming week...

Six days above the freezing mark! So this may all melt...

I, for one, would be DELIGHTED if we DIDN’T HAVE a white Christmas!

I didn’t know that!

One of my (grown-up) kids recently messaged me: What’s the difference between splatter and spatter?

I don’t know... is there a difference? I messaged back...

I thought you’d know - you were an English teacher.

I guess I didn’t use those words all that often.

So I googled: spatter vs splatter...

And lo and behold - there is a difference! Spatter is scattering SMALL drops - and SPLATTER is scattering large ones!

Live and learn!

Hearing Aid Update

I didn't know what to expect when I decided to get hearing aids last spring after a second annual hearing test revealed that I no longer heard very high pitches. Though some hearing loss is a normal part of aging, I didn’t feel that I couldn’t hear. One audiologist agreed that I was “borderline” - but mentioned that it’s easier to adjust if one got hearing aids earlier. The brain would readjust.

But what would hearing aids be like?

I have had several surprises!

The first was that I had been talking loudly... (I used my “teacher voice” all the time.) I immediately start talking more softly...

But then came a second surprise: I seem to be allergic to the material the wires and domes are made of.. (Silicone?)

After several hours, my ear canals would become irritated. As the summer months went by, I became less tolerant of them. So I’ve had to stop wearing them until the irritation in my ears heals and I’m able to get an acrylic mould made to replace them.

Reading about “contact dermatitis” in the ear canal, I discovered that some people are similarly allergic to their ear buds.

The things I’m learning! I had no idea!

I’ve also gained new respect for this wonderfully complex and sensitive part of my body that allows me to hear!

How to Decorate With Quilts

The October edition of Canadian House & Home had an article on “How to Decorate With Quilts.”

I was interested! I have more quilts than I know what to do with!!

To cover a table? No, I’ve never done that!

On a bed? I’ve done that!

A wall hanging? I’ve done that in the past… but have none hanging right now… I do have one hanging over the upstairs banister…

And another on the back of a rocking chair…

Hopefully they won’t get bleached by the sun!

I’d really love to have a large frame on the wall… like the one in the picture on the right, where several quilts can hang.

Not sure if I’d have enough wall space for that. Instead, I just pile them up!

Sweater... Done!

I finished my latest sweater, just in time to show it to my daughter - the night before we were leaving to visit her.

I know why you rushed to finish it, she said. You want to drive to Paris, Ontario for more yarn...

The girl knows me so well!

Vintage!

I can’t believe how an old car - so much like my dad’s 1956 Meteor - draws so much attention in a parking lot!

Among the features noticed by a young man checking the car out was the lack of neck rests... There were no seat belts either in those days.

I noticed that the front rear view mirrors were small ... and so far forward! Not on the doors...

So many things have changed!
