One of the highlights of our trip to Alberta a few weeks ago was a reunion between Terry and his two brothers. They hadn't all been together in 25 years! We had arranged to meet in Vegreville, halfway between Edmonton (where Terry's brother Barry lives) and Vermillion (home of his brother Kelly). We picked Barry up and headed off.
We had been driving through the countryside where farmers were busy harvesting crops when Barry noticed a sign: Mundare.
That's where they have the giant sausage, he told us. (So, of course, we had to made a small detour and see it!)
We discovered the replica kielbasa hanging near the entrance to the town, a symbol of one of Mundare's famous establishments: Stawnichy's Meat Processing. Mundare's other attractions are the Ukrainian Cultural Village outside of town, which was closed for the winter, and the Basilian Fathers Museum, which we unfortunately didn't have time to visit.
We wandered around the town...
... amazed at this sign (only $1 needed to start a business?).
We admired the paintings on the walls of many buildings.
I resisted the urge to go into this cute quilt shop, knowing that I wouldn't be able to leave without buying something!
We admired the grain elevator on the edge of town.
And of course we bought some sausage! Delicious!
I definitely want to come back!
