Orchid, in Bloom... Again!

I've never had much luck growing orchids, but they are great air-purifiers - so I went out and bought one last year. It bloomed for a while, and eventually dropped its petals.

Could I get it to bloom again? The temperature in our house is anything but Hawaii-like! Hopefully, I watered it and kept it near a window that gets indirect sunlight, except in the late afternoon...

I could hardly believe it when - recently - it started to bloom again!

That's all the encouragement I need to go out and get another! They are so beautiful!

Torontonians Love Their Pets!

It's not unusual to see people walking dogs in Toronto. Torontonians love their pets...

But I was surprised to see this dog in a motorcycle sidecar...

... wearing goggles!

He was obviously enjoying the ride!

Shadow Art

A few days ago, my daughter sent me a picture of some origami shadow art.

I'm not sure where this exhibit of shadow faces is being held - but I was impressed with the illusions the artist could create using light and a few wrinkles on simple pieces of paper.

It made me more aware of "shadow art" around me! Before long I noticed some shadow "faces" right in our yard...

These two "heads" were created with the wrinkles in our barbecue cover! They just happened - no artist at work here!

Birthday Gift!

Today is Terry's birthday...

It's a safe bet to say that his favorite birthday gift this year is a new name he's been given - "Grandpa."

Here he is - just last week - holding his first grandchild!

Happy birthday, Grandpa!

Screened Porch

Terry and I have often talked about building a screened porch. We thought about building one when we renovated our house a dozen years ago, but we couldn't find a good location, one that wouldn't darken the house by blocking one window or another.

Recently I saw one in Brockville that I liked... It wasn't attached to any other structure. This one was used as a shelter for smokers. In barbecue season, it might be used as a dining room, too.

With no smokers in the family, would we use a shelter like that, to eat in or just to sit outdoors?

Those are the questions I've been pondering: Where would we put it? And what would we use it for?

Brockville - Before Tourist Season

Terry had to visit a student in Brockville recently, so I went along for the ride.

Hard to believe that they'd had a spring snowstorm earlier in the day.

By the time we got there mid-afternoon, most of the snow had disappeared.

In spite of the cool breeze off the water, we wandered around a bit.

Then we stopped for supper in a brand new restaurant.

The food was attractive ... and delicious!

I hope they do well and stay around for a while.

I'd like to come back again!

Finding and Using Your Gifts

Teachers - like me - tend to view life as a predictable pattern, with age-appropriate goals. At a certain age, you start school, graduate, go to university or college, begin to work, then marry and have children... That is the pattern my parents expected me to follow. They would have been disappointed had I not followed that path.

Occasionally I meet people who don't do life like that. They find their own way - like a former teacher colleague who worked at a butcher shop after graduating from high school. Only when she became bored with that job did she think about going to university and becoming a teacher. I admire people who intuitively choose their own way.

I have been reading an interesting book entitled Following the Path: The Search for a Life of Passion, Purpose, and Joy. The book is interesting to me for two reasons. One is that the author turns 80 this year: She wrote the book when she was in her 70's. In it she was obviously reflecting on moving forward - at a time in life when most people think of retiring, slowing down. The second reason the book interests me is that the author, Joan Chittister, doesn't stop at the idea of finding your gift or talent. She goes on to state that true satisfaction comes at "becoming that gift to others."

She then adds: "...no one I know thinks it all happens in a straight line. Life is far more exciting than that... Finding our own particular challenge may be difficult at first. But we do. Finally. Eventually. However difficult the way."

In retirement I'm still looking for "gifts" - untapped interests - for my present stage of life. There are so many things I'd like to do!

Like all of us, I have undoubtedly used a number of "gifts" to get me through life until now. So my quest now is to uncover more "gifts" - and use them well, so that they become gifts to others. I like to think that God created us to become a blessing to others.
