We watched them practicing nearby, but no, we didn't try!
We were told that surfing used to be the sport of Hawaiian kings, but it was popularized by a famous Hawaiian swimmer, a five-time Olympic medalist who loved to surf. There is a statue of him on Waikiki beach.
We were also told that in the winter, the waves are bigger on the other side of the island, so serious surfers are found there at this time of year.
