To celebrate a recent family birthday, we went to a restaurant located in a historic manor built almost two hundred years ago, in the 1830's.
We didn't know there was an equally historic garden nearby.
The lovely walled garden is only a few steps from the restaurant.
It was built, in Scottish tradition, as a vegetable garden at the same time that the house was built. (Apparently in Scotland, a walled vegetable garden was essential in every wealthy family's residence.)
This tradition continued here at Maplelawn. (You can click on the picture of the plaque to read it.)
Eventually flowers were introduced into the kitchen garden...
Over time the stone wall fell into disrepair, but it - and garden - were restored and declared a historic site...
Now the flower are tended by volunteers.
