Red Sky at Night

Red sky in the morning - sailors take warning!
Red sky at night - sailors delight.

I learned this verse as a child, and think of it whenever I notice a red sky. I assume that centuries of sky-gazing have taught people a law of nature: red sunsets signal calm, sunny weather the next day. But a red sunrise is a precursor to a storm. (If you're interested in knowing why this is so, the Hong Kong Observatory provides an explanation!)

We have had a lot of beautiful red sunsets the past little while. Here is one I tried to capture a few days ago...

I began to notice these amazing artistic displays when forest fires were burning out of control several hundred miles away - and we could smell the smoke in the air.

But rain ended that threat. And now we've been having sunny days again - and wonderful sunsets!

It's also interesting that our house faces south, so these sunsets are in the north-west..., more north than west.

Do they still have daylight 24 hours a day in the arctic circle - "the land of the midnight sun"?
