Gearing Up For Halloween
"Halloween fever" has taken hold!
Decorations everywhere! (Even at the mall...)
When my kids were young, we'd carve a pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern. The next day, I'd scrape out the melted candle wax and make pumpkin pie.. (But I haven't done that for years!)
My grandson informed me that pumpkins can also be carved into boats... Really?!!
So I did an online search...
It turns out he was right!
I guess I've just never seen a pumpkin big enough to sit in!

Wild Life Among Us
It doesn't take much to remind me that - although we live in a city of a million human inhabitants - we are surrounded by at least that many animals and birds as well. Many species come out in the dark, when I'm rarely out. I don't even know they're there.
I see dozens of squirrels daily. It's rare that I look out the window without seeing one. Raccoons, chipmunks, mice, groundhogs, coyotes and foxes inhabit our neighbourhood, as well, though I see them less frequently. And, of course, lots of birds!
There are skunks, too ... one sprayed our neighbour's dog a few mornings ago when the dog was let out into the back yard. She's an indoor dog... For two days every window in their house was left open, until the scent of the spray disappeared!
Then, a few days later, this owl (a barn owl?) swooped into this same neighbour's garage workshop, three crows in wild pursuit.
Fortunately, the owl soon exited through the open garage door - then attempted to hide in our pine tree.
Eventually it flew away, still chased by the crows.
This little taste of wild animal life has reminded me that they all live here, among us, all the time... a fact I usually forget!!

Most Beautiful Time of the Year!
Every October I'm reminded that autumn is definitely my favorite season.
Those amazing colours all around us!
Or walk outdoors...
Without feeling exuberant JOY surrounded by these colourful leaves?!

Our "Tradition"
Whenever my son comes over for a meal...
... he always suggests going for a walk around the block afterwards.
There are always things to talk about...
... like the lightening ball that passed through our living room during a thunderstorm when he was four.

Sometimes neighbours to stop and talk to.
Is this his way of re-connecting with the neighbourhood he grew up in?
To both of us, these habitual walks - our weekly tradition - mean a lot.

Almonte Walk By the River
Last weekend, I took a walk with several family members along a trail that passes through Almonte.
The trail was originally the site of a railroad line connecting a number of towns in this part of the province.
I often see cyclists use the path in summer - and ski-doers in winter, but we chose to leave it and cross a pedestrian bridge to circle back into town.
A very picturesque walk!.
At this time of year, the fall colours make it exceptionally beautiful.
The weather was warm and sunny - perfect for walking.
Next time I'd like to go a little farther down the path.

Costume Time
Halloween is fast approaching! Time to plan costumes! It's so exciting!
My granddaughter wanted one she could dance in... This one fit the bill!
My grandson is a robot (I think!)
When I was a child, I was always a carnival "gypsy" - wearing an embroidered blouse of my mother's, one of her skirts - lots of bangles and beads - and (of course) lipstick! I think my brother was usually a cowboy.
Terry says his most memorable costume was a ball and chain... and a striped prisoner's suit.
Childhood memories of good times! And now, making memories!

Getting Into Basketball
Basketball holds a special place in the hearts of those who live in Almonte...
After all, James Naismith, who invented the game, grew up here.
The game, as now played, differs a bit from the one he first invented. For one thing, the "baskets" now have openings in the bottom to allow the ball to pass through!
But an interesting coincidence: my grandson's first taste of basketball is in a school that bears James Naismith's name!

Dawn and Dusk in October
I love to wake up in natural light with the dawn - and I often do. But these days I find myself sleeping longer. This is what 7:30 AM looked like yesterday morning... in October.
Here's the same view 11 hours later, at 6:30 PM...
And half an hour after that, at 7 PM, the area is in total darkness - or would be - except for the soccer field lights.

More Arizona Memories!
A few days after leaving Flagstaff on my virtual walk along Route 66, I find that I'm already in Williams, Arizona.
On my ACTUAL trip to Arizona in September 2019, my son and I, together with his family, flew to Phoenix, then rented a car to drive to Flagstaff. The following day, we drove to Williams...
Or was it Williams Junction? I don't remember...
There we boarded an old fashioned steam train that would take us to Grand Canyon Village and back.
It was an exciting adventure...
And now I'm back in Williams - on a virtual trek.
I'm pinching myself! I can't believe I've walked not only from Flagstaff to Williams, but from Chicago to there!

Darkening Days
Our weather this summer was hot and sunny..,
Then, in autumn, more moderate temperatures. Not quite so hot.
"Perfect" - for me.
But, as our days get cooler, we have less sunlight, too. We now have 5 fewer hours of daylight than during the "longest" summer days of June. That's a lot!
But it's not over yet! Two more hours to lose as we move toward Christmas and the "shortest" days of the year.
Ah! But then we start to ADD minutes of daylight. I wonder how this daily change in light affects us... Does increased daylight give us optimism? I love to wake up with the dawn.

Unplanned BOOK Surprise
Friends of the Almonte (Mississippi Mills) public library currently have a book sale at a mall next to the Tim Horton's coffee shop.
It will be on for a few more days...
We didn't plan to buy anything... But we went in to look around.
With winter coming, we'll probably be home a lot more... so looking for things to do.
I picked up a few books for myself, mostly crafting books, but also one about the Rideau Canal. Ivy got some cook books in excellent condition. Terry chose a few memoirs... The price was right: No set price. Pay what you want - a donation!
A great way to share books!
