Coffee and Dessert at the Miller's Oven in Manotick

Yesterday Terry and I drove to the nearby village of Manotick...

... for a winter treat. (Yes, we still have snow!)

We decided to have coffee at a cafe with a difference: It's run by seniors as a fund-raiser for their programs.

It's open 7 days a week, from 9 to 4. I don't think the building was ever a bakery (or an oven)... It probably derived its name from its proximity to an old historic mill just up the street.

Senior volunteers serve as waiters and cashiers during the week. On weekends they are assisted by local teens who volunteer their time and gain serving experience. In Ontario, high school students are required to do 40 hours of volunteer work in order to get their high school diploma, so that is probably added incentive for some to volunteer.

The cafe is a cozy, cheerful place that has has been around as long as I can remember and is well known in the community.

I usually order quiche and salad - this time I had blueberry pie with ice cream... And, of course, numerous coffee refills!

Terry ordered his favorite - lemon meringue pie.

And when she saw me photographing the food, our waitress offered to take our picture, too!
