The novel (as a literary form) only emerged in the 1700's. But riddles are very old... In fact, there is at least one in the Bible.
I recently came across this famous (I presume, ancient) riddle, known as the Riddle of the Sphinx...
What goes on four feet, then on two feet, then on three - But the more feet it goes on, the weaker it be?
