Day 2 ... At the Thames

We spent our second day in London exploring the neighborhood around our hotel... And, of course, we got lost!

(But we weren't the only ones!)

Home of many law offices and Royal Courts of Justice, our neighborhood had a lot of quaint, narrow streets... perfect for losing one's way...

Full of detours...

Some streets curve, or suddenly end.. like this one, though in this case there is, fortunately, a narrow walkway through the arch!

We were looking for a museum I had read about, a house left to the city by Sir John Soane, a prominent architect a hundred and fifty years ago. His one stipulation, in leaving his house to the city, was that nothing in it could ever be changed... So there it is, a fascinating example of life more than a century ago...

We wandered this way...

And that...

But we never found it!

Instead, we eventually found ourselves at the Thames River, not imagining that it was so close by...

We saw a modern footbridge - The Millennium Bridge...

...and decided to cross, not knowing what was on the other side...

We were pleasantly surprised to discover the Tate Gallery of Modern Art...

And a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theater, which was destroyed 450 years ago when some props caught fire. (The new theater is built on the original site of the old.)

After looking around, we eventually headed back...

... this time taking a different bridge ...

We decided not to go as far as the Tower Bridge, which we could see further up the Thames in the distance...

But later that evening, we took a subway from our hotel to the Tower Bridge, and saw this beautiful view of the city.
