Dickinson Days 2014

Terry and I drove to the village of Manotick last weekend to check out their annual "Dickinson Days" celebration.

(Did someone come by uni-cycle?! We spotted this one "parked" in the mill.)

The festival is named after the village founder, Moss Kent Dickinson, who also built the historic mill on the river.

I am always interested in the traditional craft displays outside the mill. Last year I talked to a woman who was turning an old time knitting machine to make socks. I think this lady is a lace maker, preparing to set up her things.

This year we stopped to chat with a stone mason who had moved to Canada from Ireland five years ago with his wife and four children to work on renovations on Parliament Hill.

It was interesting to see that some skills - like stone masonry - not only continue to exist, but are in demand for renovations of old buildings, so people can still earn a living doing them.

We watched as he worked on some signs - an address and the name Manotick - which he was chipping out of rocks that he had found in his back yard.

What a great craft to learn! All you need is a hammer and chisel - and rocks found on the ground!
