Back to Botanical Drawing

Botanical drawing and painting class began again this month. Our instructor brought in lots of fall harvest samples to inspire us.

I decided to keep it simple...

...and sketched two apples, focusing on their different textures.

This summer one of the artists in the class, together with Kerry (our instructor), submitted paintings to the 16th annual international art exhibition sponsored by the American Society of Botanical Artists in New York City.

Roz's painting of birch bark won honorable mention. (I remember the oohs and aahs when she brought the painting to class last spring to show us. She had been working on it all winter.) It was also featured on this post card put out by the Horticultural Society of New York.

I don't expect to ever get to that level... But it's fun to be challenged by those who are that good!

Come to think of it, Kerri's painting of a clove of garlic - which can also be seen on the American Society of Botanical Artists website above - gave me the idea for this painting of an onion! We learn - and gain inspiration - from each other!
