Neighborhood Update 2011

Our neighborhood - established in the 1940s - used to be on the outskirts of town. An area of large lots and small houses, it definitely didn't have that crowded feeling that many new neighborhoods have.

"I could live here," I remember telling Terry when we came to looked at a house that was for sale. "This neighborhood feels like home!"

And that is how it has been in the years we've lived here: Small houses with lovely gardens. I never tire of admiring the many stately trees that grow on every block.

But all that is slowly changing. As old houses are sold, many new owners don't want the houses. They want the land to build a new house on. So they simply tear down the house, or remove it and build one - and sometimes two - enormous houses that completely fill the lot... No garden space remains!

Last year several houses on our street were moved away, to be set up out of town. First one... And then another...

I guess I shouldn't complain... The new houses replacing them are lovely.

The first house to go has been replaced by one that isn't finished yet...

The second house moved is being replaced by two houses... Though only one is now done.

But I am always happy when - instead of replacing a small house with one that fills the lot, people simply renovate or build smaller houses...

... (like this house) and still maintain the peaceful sense of green space that the neighborhood is known for.
