Rideau Falls in Late February

A few days ago, Terry headed over to the Rideau Falls...

Some years, in spring, large chunks of ice come flying over the falls...

It's an impressive sight.

But when we were there, most of the water was frozen - though some was coming through at the far end of the dam.

Maybe it's too early - or maybe they don't need to dynamite the ice to prevent flooding this year, Terry commented. The river didn't completely freeze over this winter...

We walked over to the other side of the dam and saw that workers had  been busy cutting up river ice... Do they do this before they dynamite? Or instead?

It looks like they had to remove the snow first...
What a big job!

I tend to forget that there are experts in many fields - even in keeping rivers free-flowing in spring.
