A Touch of Old Europe... in Quebec

The most interesting part of my summer has been my "discovery" of the charm of "Old" Quebec City... the first European settlement in Canada.

The walled "old city" speaks of a time when this was a French military bastion.

(The grass was a part of the camouflage, we were informed.)

More than 400 years later, the walls remain.

Now the quaint old buildings hold restaurants and boutiques...

The city is a popular tourist destination.

Some squares are closed off for free summer concerts.

The charm of the city was matched by the friendliness of the locals we met:

The horse and buggy driver who gave us a guided tour...

People who told us where to buy the best croissants in the city...

The gentleman who told us his favorite restaurant (Cafe du Monde) was near the St. Lawrence River, at the foot of the walled city.

How can we forget the couple (on their way home from work) who saw us perusing a map?

What are you looking for? they asked.

A free performance of Cirque du Soileil, that starts in about 10 minutes, we replied.

It's a little complicated to get there on foot... Why don't we just drive you? they offered...

We arrived just as the performance was beginning... under an overpass. As cars and trucks crossed the bridge, we sat on the grass and watched an amazing performance... The backdrop, trapeze and tightropes hanging from the bridge. It is a performance I will never forget!

(Unfortunately it was getting dark, so my one picture is blurry.)

For its friendliness and old-world charm...

...Quebec City is now one of my favorite Canadian vacation destinations.
