Squirrels in Winter

Squirrels do not hibernate in winter. They are as active as ever!

Like this grey squirrel...

I have no idea what he is doing in my flower bed.  In fall, I packed down a dozen layers of newsprint to smother out some invasive plants... right where he is sitting. The bricks are there to hold the newsprint down.

There he is... busily tearing it up!

Then, in the safety of the fence, he stuffs it into his mouth...

Then he heads back for more!

Is he eating it?! (Newsprint is made of wood, imprinted with soy-based ink.)

Or will he regurgitate it to fortify his nest?

I don't know... All I know is that he is undoing my gardening efforts... even in winter!
