Visiting Historic Lancaster, Pennsylvania

One of the most interesting places we visited on our recent Pennsylvania vacation...

... was historic downtown Lancaster.

There was a Farmers Market next door to the tourist information center.

So, of course we had to explore!

Outside the Farmers' Market, we spotted a Lancaster mounted police...

... whose uniform bore a strong resemblance to the traditional uniform of Canada's RCMP!

We signed up for a walking tour.

Our guide, a retired minister, entertained us with fascinating stories of the downtown area...

Many of the city's historic buildings like this old hardware store - have been converted into stores and restaurants.

This tobacco shop (founded in 1770) is one of the oldest in the United States.

We walked past a number of old churches...

... and into one church graveyard. The six elevated graves closest to the church bear the remains of a wealthy family with a sad story. The two daughters in the middle graves committed suicide because their father refused to let them marry the men they loved. The father was convinced that the men were after his family's fortune. Ironically the young lawyer the first daughter wanted to marry ended up becoming president of the United States. (The only bachelor president in US history - he never married.) The second wanted to marry a young clergyman who eventually became one of the most famous Anglican (Episcopalian) clergymen in New York City. It appears that the young men did very well without the Coleman family fortune!

We would have liked to spend more time in Lancaster!

One day wasn't enough time to see it all!
