Ala Moana Shopping Center

I had come to Hawaii to walk outdoors again - so daily plans included several hours of wandering around. One of my favorite walking destinations was Ala Moana Shopping Center, a 45-minute walk from our hotel.

We passed hotels and parks - and this canal created in 1928 to drain swamp land where Honolulu's large hotels now stand.

When it was first built in 1959, Ala Moana was the largest shopping center in the United States!

I like it because it has a "town square" feel about it. A gathering place for visitors and residents, it often has free outdoor entertainment...

... like these dancers...

... and this Hawaiian band.

Every other day, we would walk over to the mall - then take the bus back to our hotel, laden down with snacks and souvenirs!
