Terry's Gift

A few weeks ago, Terry was the recipient of an early Christmas present...

While our car was being repaired, Terry was given a Mercedes Benz as a loaner!

Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that would occur! Driving it (for three days) was very exciting! It always wanted to go faster...

But he had to give it back... (Sigh!)

Thought I'd show you his real Christmas gift from "Santa"! He researched it, asked for it and got it!

What is it? You may be wondering...

It's not a gun!! And it's not a guitar!

It's a light weight hand saw (blade not shown in the picture)... with extra long reach. With it, he'll be able to cut off tree branches without having to stand on a ladder!

A practical garden tool! Hope he enjoys it!

Merry Christmas!

Turkey Dinner

Terry and I enjoyed a traditional Christmas turkey dinner a few weeks ago - at the Miller's Oven Tea Room and Cafe in Manotick.

The meal was lovely - we were joined by our older son as well as our neighbours, Earl and Mary.

As often happens with me, my enjoyment of the food makes me forget to take photos! At least until dessert arrives!

Terry enjoyed his "mile high" lemon pie - while the rest of us had carrot cake with cream cheese icing.

A day or so later, the Miller's Oven posted a picture on Facebook of a special lemon merangue pie they had made for Christmas - in a Grinchy shade of green!

It may become a new seasonal favorite!

Elf Fun and Games

I spent some time last weekend watching my grandson play with his elves.

He created a series of "elf traps" ...

He took an elf with him when he went to church to rehearse for Christmas...

Like any active boy...

... the elf was always moving around!

Later, Jericho wanted to visit elves in various stores with elf  displays - like the one above at Baker Bob's.

Our best (and safest) elf game was taking turns hiding his elves for the other to find! I'd take two and he'd take two. As we counted to 10, we'd head in different directions and drop them behind doors or toss them under beds for the other to find. (Much safer than putting an elf in a light fixture...)

I really hadn't realized how much fun playing with elves can be!

Giving Self-Made Gifts!

A friend of mine likes to make all the gifts she gives at Christmas. A lot of time and thought go into every gift.

From time to time, I'm inspired to follow her example - but I don't have the stamina to keep it up!

My daughter recently sent me a photo of this scarf pattern that someone she knows knit for everyone on her Christmas list.

Interesting! ! I'd like to try knitting one for myself!

Another self-made gift that would be fun to make - and delicious to receive - are decorated gingerbread cookies.

Decorating these was an activity everyone enjoyed at Jericho's birthday party a few weeks ago!

Such a great idea! Fun to make and give!

Winter Waiting

I have my eye on two plants in my sitting area...

They're getting ready to bloom ... (I hope)

The white bud is a Peace Lily.

I used to think that the plant with the pink buds (in the second picture) is a Christmas cactus - but I'm not sure.

The orchid in the next room is also developing buds - so I have hopes for it, too! They look like little bumps on the stem.

It would be wonderful if any (or all) of these plants were in bloom this Christmas?!  A joyful "gift" of colour and life!

What Happened to the Snow?!

A week ago, winter arrived in full force and beauty!

Terry predicted that the snow would be here until April...

But unexpected things have happened!

A lot has melted over the past few days...

Not all of it - but enough for me to feel safe walking up the street to our community mail box!

I wonder what the next few days and weeks will bring!

Delicious 2-Ingredient Chocolate Cake

My daughter-in-law introduced me to a most amazing 2-ingredient no-bake chocolate mousse cake.

The two ingredients took me completely by surprise:
  • melted chocolate (semisweet bakers chocolate and/or chocolate chips), and...
  • ... APPLES?!
That's it!

She explained how she had made it. Cook apples and blend them in a blender. Then add melted chocolate and continue blending until everything is smooth and creamy. Then pour the mixture into a pan lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil and cool overnight in the refrigerator.

So delicious! It seemed too easy to be true!

But ... how many apples? How much chocolate? What ratio? I eventually looked for more details online.

The easiest instructions to follow were AI generated. (No annoying pop-up commercials...) I won't repeat them here... (There are more details.) But you can google "2-ingredient apple chocolate cake"... and it's sure to come up.

One recipe had this ratio:

The cubed apple pieces were cooked and drained. Then 1 1/2 cups were measured out and used in the cake.

I was hoping to find quantities for a smallish cake.

If you love chocolate like I do, you're sure to love this cake!

One more thing... I once made a 2-ingredient chocolate pudding using only melted chocolate chips and soft tofu. Like this cake, it worked! But make sure you use chocolate chips that you absolutely LOVE the flavour of... because that will be the flavour of the pudding - or, in this case, the flavour of cake!

Some online recipes call for dark bittersweet chocolate. That's not a flavour I enjoy, so I wouldn't use it. In the cake pictured above, my daughter-in-law used semisweet chocolate chips - and, for me, it was perfect!

Tricky Elves at Work

With my grandson's love of Christmas elves, I have been noticing them everywhere!

In this mall window display, they're helping sell watches!

In a local grocery store, this tricky elf is trying to get out of the store by pretending that he's meat!!

(Thanks, Anne, for alerting me to this!)

Who Was the Culprit?!

My older son shares a house with two large but gentle cats...

A few days ago, after work, he had supper with friends at a Korean barbecue restaurant - where every table is equipped with a grill for cooking the meat.

They were there for several hours.

When he arrived home, he immediately fell asleep on the sofa in the living room. When he woke up, he couldn't find his glasses.

Later on, he called us: I've hunted everywhere for them, but they're nowhere to be found! I don't know what to do. I know I was wearing them when I came home, so they have to be here!

Do you want Dad to come over? I asked.

I should probably explain that Terry is the master of finding things! Whenever one of us drops something and can't  find it - whether it's a tiny screw, that rolled off the table or a contact lens that accidentally fell on the floor -  he gets down on his hands and knees, with his flashlight, and inevitably finds it.

No, but I'm so frustrated, he replied.

You probably can't see all that well without your glasses. Dad will be right over.

Terry and I drove over - with his flashlight! He pulled the cushions off the sofa, moved it, shone his light under nearby furniture - nothing!

Finally Terry began to flash the light under furniture in different parts of the room.

Wait a minute! What's that under that shelf in the dining room?

The missing glasses! The lenses were all smudged... And there were cat teeth marks in the plastic!

Did one of the cats see the glasses as a new toy? Or as food... with a lingering aroma of barbecued meat? Had every residue of barbecue - been licked off the lenses?

Could be!

Now, which one of the two is the culprit?!

Unbelievable!

There are certain aspects of technology that I find almost unbelievable...

(How could that possibly happen??)

The other day, for example, I was reading some emails - including one from Pinterest, suggesting certain things that I might be interested in.

And they were right! I was drawn to the red vest / shawl in the middle right of the top photo.

I tapped on the image to find out if there was a pattern available for it... and was transported to a similar knit vest... which did have a pattern for sale...

Which is why, after thinking about it for a day, I purchased the pattern online, downloaded it to my phone, and immediately printed the pattern on my basement printer.

As I sat nearby, watching the printer spew out the pattern pages - in colour - I thought: I don't believe this is happening! How is this possible?!

In a matter of minutes, I went from

  • a picture in an email to
  • an online purchase from a pattern designer in Colorado to
  • a pattern downloaded to my phone to
  • a printed copy (in colour) - in my hand.
It honestly felt surreal! (And the picture quality is amazing!)

What would my mother or my grandmother have thought had they been here to witness what had just happened?!

And - to tell the truth - I'm dumbfounded and  amazed as well!

Snowy Weather!

Last Saturday, we had a large snowfall.

Terry and I didn't go far - but we did run a few errands.

The roads were snow-covered...

And in the midst of all this... a cyclist wove his way through the traffic!

Crazy!! He looked confident - as though he was no stranger to biking in snow.

I just hope he arrived home safe and sound!

Daylight Update

Daylight is precious these winter days... precisely because there's so little of it, compared to the rest of the year.

I took this picture a little after 7 pm one evening last week. After three hours of darkness, I was thinking of going to bed!

How well I remember driving to work before dawn - at 7 am - and returning home 9 hours later, at 4 pm during my working days. The sun had already set.

Another day missed! I hadn't been outdoors at all during daylight.

During COVID I started tracking sunrise and sunset... and I still do.

Today the sun will rise at 7:35 am, a minute later than it did yesterday... But ... it will set a minute later than yesterday, as well. That means that both yesterday and today, we had 8 hours and 45 minutes of daylight... No decrease!

The changeover to GAINING a minute a day has begun!

Tree Decorating Time!

I was recently hanging out with my grandkids, keeping an eye on them while their dad worked in his home office...

The elves were out - so thoughts of Christmas were in the air.

Can we put up the tree? one of them asked.

Go ask your dad, I replied... if he's not on a call...

Before long, a tree - and several boxes of decorations - appeared and the two of them got to work. I just stood back and watched. Considering they're only six and nine, I really didn't know what to expect!

But I was pleasantly surprised!

I couldn't have done better myself!

(Even the elves got in on the action!)
