Surprised by Gananoque!

On our last trip home from Guelph, Terry and I stopped in Gananoque on the St. Lawrence River. We often stop for gas on their Main Street…

But this time, for a change, we headed towards the waterfront.

There we discovered a neighborhood we didn’t know existed…

Rows of beautiful old homes…

And several other surprises!

A lovely old inn on the water - the Gananoque Inn - with a spacious outdoor veranda restaurant.

After eating, we walked to a nearby bridge…

There, near the tour boat landing, we discovered a secret: the houses we had admired backed on to a river.

(Or is it a canal?)

And many - if not all - of the homes have boathouses in their back yards!

How many other Canadian towns can boast of homes with boathouses… next to the St. Lawrence River?!

I wonder - Were boats the main form of transportation here when these houses were built?!
