Bayfield and Goderich - on Ontario's "West Coast"

Last weekend, the prospect of unseasonably warm weather inspired Terry and me to drive to southern Ontario to see our daughter. Whenever we visit her, especially now during the pandemic, we try to be outdoors as much as possible. Where could we visit this time?!

One of her friends had often mentioned a town called "Bayfield" on Lake Huron, a popular tourist destination for people living in the area.

Why not drive there and see what it's like? our daughter suggested.

Perusing the map, I saw that the town of Goderich was only a few miles north of Bayfield. One of my former teaching colleagues grew up there and often talked about it. It had always seemed so far away - but not if we were already in Bayfield.

Bayfield and Goderich are about - an hour's drive west of Stratford, Ontario - a place we visited on a previous visit.

Our day there was lovely and warm. It was hard to believe we were in November!

The one difference was that dusk came early - so we drove back home in the dark.

When we got to Bayfield, we were surprised to see a lot of tourists. I guess we weren't the only ones drawn by the warm weather.

After walking around the park for a bit, we continued on to Goderich, a much larger town.

As we drove around, we kept discovering little parks overlooking the water. We eventually ended up at "Sunset Beach" - near the lake.

I was surprised to discover that there was an underwater salt mine in Goderich. I had no idea that Canada even had salt mines! Apparently, there is a large underground salt deposit at this spot.

(Does this mean that Lake Huron was once an ocean?! More research needed!)

I also discovered - online - that normally the mine offers tours - but not now, due to the pandemic.

That would be so interesting to see! I'll put it on my list of things to do, once the pandemic is over.

Travelling - During the Pandemic

A week ago, the weather suddenly turned warm...

It felt almost spring-like!

So Terry decided to take what could possibly be our last trip of the season to visit our children in southern Ontario.

The highways weren't as busy as normal.

No traffic slow-downs as we drove through Toronto.

We brought our own food with us - to avoid contact with others - and took the quiet back roads for part of the way.

This was a bonus trip! So glad we were able to go.

Remembering My Mother's Ottawa Homes

A few weeks ago, I was thinking about my mother's fourteen years here in Ottawa, reflecting how each of the three places she had lived provided so well for her needs of the time...

Her first seven years here, she lived alone in a one-bedroom apartment across the street from a shopping mall that she visited daily. She was part of an indoor "walking club"... Her goal: to walk 10,000 steps a day.

When she wasn't at the mall, she enjoyed watching activities on the street from her 8th-floor apartment.

Eventually she had a hard time sorting out her medication, so she moved from her one-bedroom apartment to a bachelor suite in an assisted living residence across the road from one of my favorite parks in the city.

I imagined her taking walks in the park - but she never did. She did, however, enjoy the extra social activities provided by the residence.

After three and a half years, she moved into the nursing home very close to our house, where she lived for four years. The people were wonderful there. She often said: This is a good place to be if you need help.

Wherever she lived, she made an effort to be happy - and, after a brief time of adjustment, she always was.

First Snow!

A week ago today, we had our first snow. Fortunately, it melted the same day!

Temperatures overall are colder - and I've pulled out my fall and winter coats!

(Hopefully I won't need them for a few more weeks.)

More Construction Changes

The weather is getting colder, so the builder of the two houses across the street is trying hard to frame them and get a roof on them before the snow falls...

They're focusing on one of the houses right now.

Every day I wonder... How far will they get today?

When will they have to dig up the street In front of our house to connect to the city plumbing pipes that are on our side of the street?

When the first framed walls go up - for the first floor - I realize that there is no way I can anticipate how tall these two story buildings look to us when they're done...

I hope they don't block out the sunlight, Terry comments... I really hope so, too!

McAfee, I Don't Trust You...

I regularly get a pop-up message from McAfee, an app I think comes with Windows...

The message suggests that I'll be safe if I let McAfee control my computer - but I really don't trust the app.

I know that McAfee used to be a good name in computer security software, but recently McAfee does nothing but annoy me by modifying my preferred search engine (Google) to Yahoo! - without permission.

Then I have to waste time figuring out how to delete Yahoo! from my search bar, where it has made itself my default search engine, and reinstate Google Search again.

My main gripe against McAfee is that it searches for commercial sites - which I assume it gets paid for! When I recently searched for information about Smiths Falls, it came up with a site for making hotel reservations... So frustrating!

McAfee, how can I trust you to protect my computer?! Messing with my computer preferences without permission does not build a relationship of trust!

The Way You Live Your Day...

A few days ago, I mentioned a book I'm currently reading, entitled Liturgy of the Ordinary...

It talks about the importance of the small, everyday things we do.

One thought that I've been reflecting on is: the way we spend our days determines the way we live our lives. It seems quite obvious... But this idea struck home, because I sometimes come across lists of things I planned to accomplish a few years ago - and I haven't done them yet.

Why haven't I made that much progress...?!

Maybe I don't really want to do them... Or maybe my priorities need to change...

The author, Tish Harrison Warren, tells how changing two daily habits changed her life. A busy wife and working mother, she wanted to enjoy her life more... So one year, for Lent, she decided to change two habits. First, she'd no longer sleep with her cell phone in the bedroom. It was too easy to be distracted by reading emails during the night. Second, a reluctant bed-maker, she decided to start making her bed.

Those two changes in her routine did make a difference... She began to reflect more on her day (while making her bed?) The emails could wait.

Reading this has left me wondering: What changes could I make to my day that would enable me to focus on some of the things I still want to do, but never seem to have time for. What is holding me back?!
